CASA DEL MANTEGNA
Severe brick building, designed by the painter Andrea Mantegna.
Legend has it that Andrea Mantegna, the great painter who painted the Chamber of the Spouses in the Ducal Palace, lived here. The rather severe brick building is said to have been designed by the painter himself in 1476, although he only lived here from 1496 to 1502. The courtyard of the house is reminiscent of the structure and the famous trompe l'oeil ceiling of the Chambre des Epoux. Before becoming the property of the Province, the house passed through the hands of several families. The building is now a centre for contemporary art and regularly hosts temporary exhibitions.
