RAMPARTS AND GUNBOATS
Imposing fortifications built between 1561 and 1588, surrounding the Upper Town.
Imposing fortifications surround the Upper Town, built in 1561 and 1588. Four gates each along one of the main communication routes give access to the town: the Sant'Agostino gate towards Venice, the San Giacomo gate towards Milan, the Sant'Alessandro gate towards Lecco and Como and the San Lorenzo gate towards the northern valleys. Bergamo never had to repel any attack, yet two powerful cannon posts would have made it possible to defend the city. Restored in 2012, the cannoniere are now open to visitors.
