ACCADEMIA CARRARA
Neoclassical palace housing a collection of paintings, donated to the city by the Count Giacomo Carrara.
Extensive restoration work, carried out as part of Bergamo's nomination as "Italian Capital of Culture 2023", has finally given the Bergamascians back their collection of paintings, more resplendent than ever!
Since the early 19th century, a beautiful neoclassical palazzo has housed this incredible collection of paintings, donated to the city by Count Giacomo Carrara. The first room, dedicated to Northern Italian Quattrocento (15th century) painting, opens the visit with Mantegna's perfect Madonna and Child and Pisanello's intriguing Portrait of Lionello d'Este , a handsome young man in courtly prince's clothes. On the second floor, the tour continues with a selection of 16th-century works, including Giovanni Bellini's gentle Madonna di Alzano, the domestic serenity of Carpaccio's Birth of Mary, and a Saint Sebastian, a youthful work by a Raphael in his prime. This is followed by an important group of works by Lorenzo Lotto, active in Bergamo for almost ten years, and an impressive series of portraits of local aristocrats by the Bergamasque painter Giovan Battista Moroni. This is followed by the Venetian Cinquecento, with fine canvases by Titian and Palma the Younger, and the 18th century, with delightful genre scenes by Longhi and vedute by the trio of Canaletto, Bellotto and Guardi. The tour concludes on the second floor with the 19th century, with a fine Paolo and Francesca by Gaetano Previati and the expressive Ricordo di un dolore by Pelizza da Volpedo.
