NATIONAL PARK OF THE ST. LAWRENCE RIVER
The largest protected alpine area in Europe with 25 valleys in Bormio.
Straddling Lombardy and Trentino-Alto Adige, this is the largest protected Alpine area in Europe. It covers more than 300,000 ha. Created in 1935, it boasts 25 valleys, over a hundred glaciers (including the Glacier dei Forni, Italy's highest at 2,176 m), some 50 glacial lakes, 40,000 ha of forests, and numerous strictly protected plant and animal species. Marmots and weasels, roe deer, chamois, deer, ibex, partridge and marmots are not uncommon sightings. Lynx, bears and wolves, once threatened with extinction by over-hunting, are gradually returning to the park's mountains. Straddling several municipalities in Lombardy and Trentino-Alto Adige, Bormio is an ideal starting point for exploring this beautiful park. A large information office welcomes visitors and provides all the information they need on the hikes (on foot or by bike), workshops and guided tours regularly organized by the park. A small museum explains the characteristics of the fauna, flora, landscape and human constructions within the park. Stop in front of the life-size reconstruction of a Bearded Vulture nest, a rare species of vulture that has made the park its natural habitat. A video linked to a webcam films the nest of this beautiful bird live.
