ARENGARIO
Building of the Middle Ages, ancient communal palace where the imperial decrees were read.
This beautiful medieval building (1290) in red Lombard brick(cotto lombardo) is the former communal palace, where the imperial decrees were read. It rises right next to the Duomo, almost to express the opposition between civil and religious power, characteristic of the communal period. Under the portico were kept the medieval units of measurement for commercial use. On the first floor, a large room dedicated to the assemblies. On the north side, the bell tower dates back to the 15th century. Today it hosts temporary exhibitions.
