BASILICA DI SAN VINCENZO IN GALLIANO
2 km from the centre of Cantù, this beautiful collection of religious architecture, an important witness of Romanesque art, consists of the basilica dedicated to Saint Vincent and a baptistery dedicated to Saint John-Baptiste. Both are located on the top of a small hill and can therefore be seen from afar. The Romanesque Basilica was built between the th and th centuries in the location of a previous Burgundian building. Its simple and sober facade is almost entirely devoid of ornaments, while the interior with three naves presents a cycle of pretty and relatively well preserved frescoes. There are scenes of the Life of Saints and various biblical episodes (Adam and Eve). In the apse throne a Christ in the Majesty. The baptistery, on the other hand, dates back to the same time and would therefore be one of the oldest in Lombardy. Surrounded by an open circular gallery, the matroneo was also celebrated.
