MONASTERO DI TORBA
Monastery erected by the Romans as a defensive post to protect the nearby village.
Located 15 km south of Varese, the monastery of Torba is worth a visit. This complex dates back to the5th century and was originally erected by the Romans as a defensive post to protect the nearby village. Later transformed into a Benedictine monastery for almost 700 years, then turned into a farm, and abandoned in the early 19th century, it has been managed by the Fondo Ambiente Italiano since 1977 and is open to visitors. In 2011, the monastery was declared a Unesco World Heritage Site. The beautiful hieratic frescoes testify to its religious past.
