COLLEGE MUSEUM
An exceptional museum center with a basilica designed by the Solari brothers.
The church, the baptistery and above all the cycle of frescoes by Masolino da Panicale represent one of the greatest testimonies of the transition from the Gothic to the Renaissance style (1422-1425). This exceptional museum, located on the top of the hill above Castiglione, has a great elegance that is reminiscent of Tuscan villages. The visit begins with the basilica, built by the Solari brothers, renowned architects who worked in Milan where they contributed to the construction of the Duomo. Here, a splendid Christ in majesty adorns the tympanum of the church; amazing representations of evangelists are right at its feet. The choir is decorated with three cycles of frescoes: of the Virgin, of St. Stephen and of St. Lawrence. The cycle of the Life of the Virgin, by Masollino da Panicale, is certainly the most beautiful for the softness of its expressions and the brightness of its colours. The visit continues in the baptistery at the end of the garden, the highlight of the tour. The interior is entirely frescoed with scenes from the Life of St. John the Baptist, by Masolino da Panicale, one after the other. The abundance of refined details and pictorial mastery make it one of Masolino's most accomplished works. Along the walls, characters from the biblical story merge with those from the court life of the artist's time. In the Baptism of Christ, the River Jordan meanders through a Lombard landscape, while Herod's Banquet has all the makings of a 15th-century feast.
