ABBAZIA DI PIONA
The history of this graceful little monastery dates back to 610 ha. The first religious oratory dedicated to Sainte Justine was built on the narrow peninsula on the lake along the coast between Colico and Varenna. A church was consecrated in 1138 near the remains of another Romanesque edifice, which remains only the apse. The building had to wait until the 1960 s to be elevated to the rank of abbey. The charpentée nave with the powerful stone walls preserves the remains of the th and th centuries frescoes, whose liveliness of colours is still clear. On the right side, you can reach the picturesque cloister dated 1257, bordered by a gallery of arcades with fine columns with sculpted capitals. Here there is a unique atmosphere where monks (now Cistercian) observe the ora rule and labora rule ("prays and works").
