CHIESA DI SANTA CATERINA A FORMIELLO
Church with a single nave flanked by side chapels, one of which contains the remains of the martyrs of Otranto
A stone's throw from the castle and the Capuana Gate. The church, designed by the architect Romolo Balsimelli, was built between 1500 and 1593. It has a Latin cross interior with a single nave flanked by five side chapels. The third on the left preserves the remains of the martyrs of Otranto, beheaded by the Turks during the sack of Otranto in 1480. Among the paintings that adorn the church are two interesting works by Paolo de Matteis, The Flight into Egypt and The Presentation at the Temple.
