It is designed on two levels: the upper church in Baroque style, linked to the world of the living, and the hypogeum, with its lower church, linked to the afterlife. Here the faithful worshipped the souls of the purgatory: they "adopted" the skulls of anonymous people and, through their prayers, accompanied their souls from purgatory to paradise. Skulls can still be seen in niches decorated with embroidered cloth, surrounded by ex-voto, photographs and rosaries.
