Basilica with dome, drum, pronaos, lateral pillars and rotunda inside
Opposite the royal palace stands the Basilica of St. Francis of Paola, encircled by a grandiose portico. Built between 1817 and 1846, it features a large dome, an imposing drum and a pronaos with six columns and two Ionic-inspired side pillars supporting a triangular tympanum. Its architect, Pietro Bianchi, drew ample inspiration from the Pantheon in Rome. Inside, a splendid rotunda 34 m in diameter is encircled by 34 Corinthian-style marble columns.
