PALAZZO FILOMARINO
Palace with baroque portal where the Neapolitan philosopher and historian Benedetto Croce lived and died
It was in this palace that the great Neapolitan philosopher and historian Benedetto Croce (1866-1952) lived and died. Dating back to the Angevins but rebuilt in 1512, the palace belonged to several families of the Neapolitan nobility, including the Filomarino, princes of Roccadaspide. The building suffered the repercussions of the Masaniello revolt in 1647. It was restored again in the 18th century, when it was equipped with a splendid baroque portal by Sanfelice. In 1947 Croce founded and installed the Italian Institute of Historical Studies in the palace.
