CASTEL SANT'ELMO
Castle in the shape of a star, one of the symbols of Naples, carved out of the tuff of the Vomero
It was the Jordanian dynasty that ordered its construction in 1329. Tino di Camaino, originally from Siena, takes part in the work on the San Martino convent. Completed years later, the castle was transformed into a fortress in the first half of the th century upon a decision by the Spanish Vice-King giving Pedro di Toledo. This austere building, in the form of a star, partially dug out of the Vomero Tufa, devoid of towers and wraparound by a deep ditch, is one of Naples'symbols.
