FONTANA DI MONTEOLIVETO
White marble fountain with a bronze statue of King Charles II at the top.
This white marble fountain was designed by Antonio Cafaro, a pupil of Cosimo Fanzago, in the second half of the 17th century (1669). The large basin features eagles and lions, meant to convey the power and splendor of royal authority. At the top, the bronze statue represents King Charles II, the last sovereign of the Habsburg dynasty of Spain. Across the street, note the beautiful Renaissance façade of the Palazzo Gravina, in piperno enhanced with white marble. The building now houses the Faculty of Architecture.
