PORTA CAPUANA
Renaissance marble gateway facing Capua, used to defend Naples on the east side
Dating from 1484, this city gate is so named because it is oriented towards Capua. It opened into the ramparts built under Ferrante I of Aragon to reinforce the defences of the city on the east side. The two circular towers made of piperno (volcanic stone) that frame it were part of the fortifications. Their massive appearance and the colour of the stone contrast with the elegance of the marble gate decorated with high reliefs. Designed by the Tuscan Giuliano da Maiano, it is one of the most famous examples of Renaissance architecture in Naples.
