GALLERIA UMBERTO I
Gallery with a facade decorated with statues and a Greek cross plan with a central glass dome.
The cholera epidemic in 1884 led to major urban redevelopment. New arteries were built and attempts were made to air out the city. The gallery, built between the San Carlo Theatre and Toledo Street, is part of this vast project. Designed by the Neapolitan engineer Emanuele Rocco, it has a Greek cross plan with a central glass dome 57 m high supported by an iron structure. Admire the polychrome marble flooring and, on the main façade, the statues by Carlo Nicoli.
