PIAZZA SAN DOMENICO MAGGIORE
Square dominated by the chevet of the church of San Domenico Maggiore with palaces and the obelisk of San Domenico.
It is one of the most beautiful squares in Naples, alive day and night. Bordered by sumptuous palaces, it is dominated by the curious crenellated chevet of the church of San Domenico Maggiore. The square was built in the 15th century by Alfonso I of Aragon; in 1658 the obelisk of San Domenico was erected as an ex-voto after the plague of 1656, which had decimated two thirds of the population. Decorated by Cosimo Fanzago, it was completed in the following century by Domenico Vaccaro (1737).
