TORRI DI FEDERICO II
Fortified access with monumental gate, crenellated towers and architecture like an ancient triumphal arch
The former monumental gate was built in 1234 at the wish of Emperor Frederick II. This fortified access to the city was flanked by two powerful crenellated towers and its architecture was reminiscent of an ancient triumphal arch. It opened at the end of a Roman bridge over the Volturno, which was destroyed by bombing in 1943 and was rebuilt. The city gate was also damaged and only the foundations of the two towers remain today. The sculptures that adorned it have been transferred to the Museo Campano in Capua.
