ANFITEATRO CAMPANO
Amphitheater among the oldest and best preserved in Italy with some remaining levels
Erected in the 2nd and 1st centuries BC, it remains one of the oldest and best preserved amphitheatres in Italy. At 170 m in diameter and 40 m high, it was the second largest amphitheatre in Italy after the Colosseum built two centuries later. The numerous lootings during the Middle Ages came to an end in the 18th century during the reign of Charles of Bourbon. Today, only three of the four levels are still visible. Some of the sculptures of deities that adorned it are on display at the Museo Campano in Capua.
