SNAIL TEMPIO
Temple of Serapis which is rather the ancient market of Pozzuoli with a statue of the god Serapis
The Temple of Serapis is a confusing name, because in reality this Roman building was a macellum, the ancient market of Pozzuoli. It consisted of a square courtyard surrounded by porticoes and small shops. The market also had a religious function, as evidenced by the statue of the god Serapis, found on the site in 1750. It is interesting to observe the extent of the effects of bradyseism on the columns. The dark spots are the result of shells that have eaten away at the stone, as the sinking of the ground submerged the remains.
