The Temple of Serapis is a confusing name, because in reality this Roman building was a macellum, the ancient market of Pozzuoli. It consisted of a square courtyard surrounded by porticoes and small shops. The market also had a religious function, as evidenced by the statue of the god Serapis, found on the site in 1750.
