ANFITEATRO FLAVIO
Well-preserved amphitheatre on three levels crowned by an attic
It is thethird largest amphitheater in Italy after the Colosseum and the one in Capua. Built during the reign of Vespasian (69-79 AD), its dimensions (149 m by 116 m) attest to the importance of the city. Built in brick and stone, it could accommodate 40,000 spectators, reflecting the technical and architectural capacities of the Romans. The building, still very well preserved, is articulated on three levels crowned by an attic. An ingenious system of trap doors connected to the basement allowed the introduction of the scenery and the cages of the wild animals into the heart of the arena
