CENTO CAMERELLE
Cistern dug in the tufa consisting of a network of underground galleries
This grandiose complex, dug into the tufa rock, bears witness to the ingenuity and technical mastery of the Romans. This cistern with its multiple galleries collected and supplied water to a maritime villa which, after having belonged to the orator and consul Quintus Hortensius Hortalus, became imperial property at the time of Nero. The cistern is composed of several independent levels built at different times, between the end of the 2nd century BC and the 1st century AD. Its network of underground galleries earned it the name "Nero's Prison".
