CAPO MISENO
Cape with an impressive rocky cliff projecting into the Tyrrhenian Sea
Those arriving by sea via the Metrò del Mare will not be able to remain unmoved by the impressive rocky cliff (167 m high), which juts out into the water. The particular configuration of the site - a semicircular surface with Lake Misene in the background - predestined it to host the main Roman naval base in the Tyrrhenian Sea. It was from Misene that Pliny the Elder, commander of the Roman fleet, set sail to observe the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD; this expedition would prove fatal.
