AVERNO LAGO
Restful lake linked to myths containing the remains of temples of Apollo.
Mythology links Pluto, god of the Underworld, to the stagnant and sulphurous waters of Lake Avernus, which lies at the bottom of a crater. Its shores would have sheltered the oracle of the Shadows of which Homer speaks, and which Ulysses will consult on his return. It is here that the priestess Sibyl will accompany Aeneas to the underworld, in search of his father. Today, it is difficult to imagine that this place, so calm and restful, could have been the origin of so many dark myths. The tour of the lake can be completed in a good hour. Lush vegetation and remains of a temple of Apollo.
