Climbing Vesuvius by bus from Pompeii or by car, beautiful view from the top

Arrival

By bus. From Pompeii, EAV bus from Piazza Anfiteatro. From Ercolano Scavi station, shuttle service. From Naples, EAV bus from piazza Garibaldi near the Hotel Terminus (Napoli-Vesuvio line).

By car. Highway A3, exit Torre del Greco or Ercolano. Then follow Vesuvio (13 km). Parking at quota 800: 3 €/4h (possibility to book online at: parkingsuvio.it). From there, continue on foot or with the shuttle bus to the ticket office at quota 1,000 (€2 round trip).

Practical information

Opening hours. Open from 9am to 3pm (last entrance) from November to February, until 4pm in March and October, until 5pm from April to September, until 6pm in July and August.

Tickets. Reservation and online purchase required at https://vesuviopark.vivaticket.it. Prices: 10 € + reservation fees; under 25 years old: 8 €; under 6 years old: free.

Duration of the visit : 1h30-2h.

The entrance to the site is at the 1000 quota. It takes about 30 minutes to climb to the crater. Once at the top, take the measure of the abyss of 400 m of diameter and 300 m of depth. You can also spot fumaroles inside the crater. On a clear day, enjoy the vast panorama over the Gulf of Naples.

Attention : there are no toilets along the path. The only ones you will find on site are those in the small bar before the entrance to the site (paying or free for customers). It is better to take precautions before starting the ascent of Vesuvius!

For the visit to the crater you pay €6.5 and £3.90 (small).

Vesuvius is really see. But do not get into the buses if you can D get there by car. Park in the parking top and climb the rest depth. This will be much cheaper and that will allow you to do it has your own pace.
