Basilica with baroque bell tower welcoming pilgrims to honor the Virgin of the Rosary
Built in 1876 and completed in 1939, the Basilica welcomes thousands of pilgrims who come every year from all over Italy to adore the Virgin of the Rosary. Bartolo Longo (1841-1926), a fervent Catholic layman and lover of Pompeii, was the driving force behind its construction. The impressive white mass with several domes and the no less striking baroque campanile dominate the square and the entire district. The painter Angelo Sandi da Salo created the dome.
