ANFITEATRO
Amphitheater of Pompeii with archaic structure hosting gladiatorial fights
Built around 70 BC, the green amphitheatre of Pompeii is among the oldest in the Roman world. Its structure is therefore still archaic, particularly as regards the circulation of spectators: the upper tiers were accessible by ramps attached to the outer wall, rather than by an internal system of galleries and stairways. Intended for gladiatorial combats and venationes (wild animal fights), it could receive 20,000 spectators, hence its off-centre position so as not to disturb the surrounding life.
