GIOVE TEMPIO
Temple of Jupiter with the silhouette of Vesuvius at the back, dedicated to the Capitoline triad
The temple of Jupiter borders the forum on its northern side; behind it stands the silhouette of Vesuvius. The real religious heart of Pompeii, it was in fact dedicated to the Capitoline triad: Jupiter, Juno and Minerva. The building was severely damaged during the earthquake in 62 and had not been restored at the time of the eruption. High podium with chambers, where the treasure of the city was kept(aerarium), and large access staircase in front. Two triumphal arches, once covered with marble and decorated with statues, frame it.
