Main food market of Pompeii with stores around a water basin in the center
Dating from the 2nd century BC, it was the main food market of the city. Near the entrance portico, pedestals supported the statues erected in honour of the notables. The interior consists of a large rectangular courtyard surrounded by a portico, with a water basin in the centre. Around it were the food shops. The decorative elements represented mythological subjects and still lifes; a fresco on one wall shows small birds and fish.
