Thermal baths of Stabies, a better preserved complex with a floor heating system
The Baths of Stabies represent the best preserved thermal complex in the city. It is also the oldest (2nd century BC), but its facilities were modernised under Augustus with, in particular, the installation of a floor heating system (hypocaust). Around a palaestra with porticoes for physical exercise are the baths, with a section for women and another for men, to the east, vast latrines, and to the west, the open-air swimming pool. Polychrome stucco decorations from the Flavian period are still visible.
