TEATRO PICCOLO
Covered theater for musical auditions, mime shows and poetry declamations
Next to the "Great Theatre", the "Small Theatre" or odeon is a covered theatre dedicated to musical performances, poetic declamations and mime shows. Well preserved, it was built during the first years of Sylla's colony (80 BC), by the duumvirs of Pompeii, i.e. the two "mayors" of the city. With a capacity of 1,300 spectators, it was equipped with a roof, which ensured an excellent acoustic. Note, at the ends of the cavea, at the base of the walls, the atlantes sculpted in the tufa.
