SURGICAL HOUSE
House with the canonical plan of the Roman domus where surgical instruments were discovered
The surgical instruments, made of iron or bronze, that were discovered there gave its name to this "House of the Surgeon". They are now on display in the Museum of Naples. It is one of the oldest in Pompeii (3rd century BC), built in large blocks of cut stone ( opus quadratum). It has the canonical plan of the Roman domus (house): a small entrance corridor leading to the atrium with its central impluvium (basin for collecting rainwater). At the back, the tablinum (office) opens onto a garden.
