ORTO DEI FUGGIASCHI
Garden of aromatic essences presenting casts of some victims of the eruption of Vesuvius
The "Garden of the Fugitives" was a vineyard with a summer triclinium sheltered by a pergola. Today, it is a garden of aromatic plants and olive trees that houses the moving casts of some of the victims of the eruption of Vesuvius. Giuseppe Fiorelli, director of the excavations between 1860 and 1875, introduced the method that has remained practically unchanged since then. The plaster, poured into the cavity left in the layer of ash by the progressive decomposition of the victim's body, reproduces its shape after solidification.
