CASA D'ARGO
Aristocratic residence with peristyle, named after a painting illustrating the myth of Io and Argos
The name of this beautiful aristocratic residence ("House of Argos", discovered in the 19th century) was inspired by a painting, now faded, illustrating the myth of Io and Argos. Io, Zeus' mistress, had been transformed into a white heifer. Hera, wife of Zeus and jealous of his many female conquests, had entrusted the giant Argos with the custody of Io so that Zeus could not approach her! Note the great peristyle with columns and pilasters around which the living rooms open, including the triclinium (dining room).
