CASA DELL'ALBERGO
Patrician residence of Herculaneum equipped with thermal baths and terrace facing the sea
The "House of the Inn" is one of the largest patrician residences in Herculaneum, but also one of the most devastated by the eruption. Because of its size, its location near an entrance to the town and the presence of a thermal bath, it has been mistakenly identified as an inn. It is in fact a private residence. Built in the time of Augustus, it had a large terrace surrounded by columns facing the sea. It seems that after the earthquake of 62, it was converted into a commercial building with shops and workshops.
