CASA SANNITICA
House of Herculaneum with a splendid atrium and a loggia with ionic columns
Dating from the 2nd century BC, it is one of the oldest houses in Herculaneum. It illustrates the building style of the Samnite (pre-Roman) period. At the entrance there is a beautiful portal with Corinthian capitals. The walls of the vestibule show a rare example of 1st style painting (imitation coloured marble slabs - 2nd century BC). Splendid atrium with floor inlaid with white tesserae. On the upper level, the loggia with Ionic columns was closed after the earthquake of 62 when the floor was transformed into an independent apartment.
