Residential area in the imperial period including the Roman necropolis and the patrician residences
The residential area, in the imperial period, was located on the hill of Varano, north-east of the present city. It was definitively buried by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 A.D. The Roman necropolis and the Villa d'Ariana are of particular interest for the beautiful frescoes that adorn them, as well as the immense Villa San Marco, located on the front of the hill. These two patrician residences, with a magnificent view over the Bay of Naples, are composed of rooms with refined decoration, gardens, terraces, swimming pools...
