DUOMO
Cathedral dedicated to Saint Mary of the Assumption and Saint Catelle in Piazza Giovanni XXIII
It is the most important building in Piazza Giovanni XXIII. Dedicated to St. Mary of the Assumption and St. Catelle, patron saint of the town, the Duomo of Castellammare was erected in 1587 to provide the town with a new cathedral after the previous building had been irreparably damaged by an earthquake. However, the Duomo was not consecrated until 1893. Next door, the old palace, built in the early 17th century and now housing the town hall, seems to have been inspired by Michelangelo's Palazzo Farnese in Rome.
