CASTELLO DI ARECHI
Castle overlooking Salerno, which houses a museum that preserves pieces from the excavations of the building
At 300 m above sea level, Arechi Castle dominates the entire town. Built on Byzantine foundations, the building constituted an essential defensive complex during the reign of the Lombard prince Arechi II (8th century). Other extensions followed in the Norman and Aragonese periods. Once at the top, there is an impressive view of the Gulf of Salerno. The building also houses an archaeological museum exhibiting the pieces discovered during the excavations of the castle, as well as a multimedia installation presenting the history of Salerno.
