CERTOSA DI SAN GIACOMO
Charterhouse with the small cloister, the church, the refectory and the large cloister with monastic cells
Charterhouse built in 1371 at the request of Count Giacomo Arcucci, secretary to the Queen of Naples, JoannaI of Anjou. The building is organized around the small cloister(chiostro piccolo), with the church and the refectory, and the large cloister(chiostro grande), surrounded by the monastic cells. Note the paintings, from the 17th to the 19th century. Dragut, a famous Turkish corsair of the 16th century, led several devastating expeditions on the island. The Saint-Jacques Charterhouse suffered the consequences before being restored. Exhibitions and concerts are regularly held there.
