THE CAPITELLO TOWER
The Capitello tower has 2 interior levels and a crenellated watchtower with 17 machicolations at Porticcio.
The Capitello tower stands on the coast at the northern entrance to Porticcio, near the present-day estuary of the Gravona and Prunelli rivers, on the only rocky spur at the bottom of the Gulf. At 11 to 12 meters high, it is more imposing than most other towers, with its 42-meter circumference at the base and 3-meter-thick walls. It has 2 interior levels and a crenellated watchtower with 17 machicolations. It was here that Napoleon rescued his family from the pursuit of Pascal Paoli's followers.
