The seat of the Head of State since 1993, this palace was built in 1760 by Count Anton Grassalkovich, President of the Hungarian Royal Chamber and advisor to Maria Theresa. At that time, it was a cultural centre, where the entire Hungarian aristocracy gathered to listen to concerts by the court orchestra conducted by Joseph Haydn. Under communism, it was the seat of the pioneers, the vanguard of the Party. Behind the palace, there is a large park and French gardens.
