The Roland fountain is the most famous in the city, located on the Place de l'Hôtel de Ville. Its construction was ordered by Emperor Maximilian II, King of Hungary, in 1572 to provide a public water supply. The fountain is surmounted by a statue of Emperor Maximilian depicted as a knight in armour. Its current appearance is probably far from the original one, since it has been modified and rebuilt several times. However, its popularity remains intact.
