It is of Danubian Gothic style dating from the 14th century and was reworked in Baroque style in the 17th century. In 1543 it became the cathedral of the Archbishop of Esztergom, who was expelled by the Ottomans. It kept this status until the departure of the archdiocese in 1820. Between 1619 and 1629 the chapels on the north and south sides of the nave were built. The church is decorated with beautiful Gothic paintings. The Virgin on the church altar is reputed to have put an end to the plague in 1710.
