In the 1880s, efforts were made to establish a town museum in Banská Bystrica. It was finally established in 1889 in the Matej house (Matejov dom), built in the second half of the 15th century. Today it houses an exhibition presenting the history of the town. Among the 2,863 items in the collection are weapons, a presentation of the town's important personalities, and Gothic sculptures and paintings.
