The National Cemetery in Martin was originally an ordinary municipal cemetery. This changed in the second half of the 19th century, when Martin became the centre of Slovak cultural and political life. It became the Slovak Pantheon. Here, artists, intellectuals and illustrious politicians from Slovak history are laid to rest in a majestic setting, surrounded by large, century-old trees. The place has been declared a national monument.
