The late Romanesque church of Saint-Étienne-de-Hongrie, originally built in the 13th century, is a real jewel. It is the oldest monument in the city, but also one of the oldest Romanesque churches in Slovakia in which fragments of original frescoes are preserved. According to an old local legend, the Hungarian king Stephen I, to commemorate his victory in a battle near Žilina in 1005, ordered its construction.
