It was founded in 1872 as the Museum of Upper Hungary and has an exhibition on the history of eastern Slovakia since the Stone Age at several sites. The richest and most important is undoubtedly that of the treasure, consisting of a collection of 2,920 gold coins minted in Kremnica for the most part. This treasure was discovered in 1975 by workers in the walls of a room called Spiš's room, at 74 Hlavná Street.
