The fortifications of the town are among the most elaborate and best preserved in the country. The first walls and bastions were built between 1350 and 1376 with a moat system. In the 15th century, construction continued with 23 bastions and 4 large main gates. Today, the best preserved parts are around the Prašná brána (Powder Tower) and Horná brána (High Gate) gates in the south, and the Dolná brána (Low Gate) gate in the north-east.
